Stonehenge & Salisbury Cathedral with Heathrow Drop-Off

The combination day: Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral, then Heathrow. This is the full-day cruise-tour option for passengers with an evening flight (5:30pm or later) who want to make proper use of the day rather than spending half of it at the airport. Stonehenge for the iconic monument, Salisbury for one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta, the tallest cathedral spire in England and a working medieval clock from 1386, all 30 minutes apart and on the natural route back towards Heathrow.

The day runs around 7 hours end to end. Earliest safe Heathrow departure is 5:30pm. For 6pm or later it’s Comfortable; for earlier than 5:30pm one of the single-stop routes (Stonehenge alone, or Windsor) fits better.

What the combination day looks like

Stonehenge first — 1h 30m at the visitor centre — then a 20-minute drive south into Salisbury. The Cathedral itself takes about an hour, the Magna Carta exhibition is in the Chapter House and takes another 20 minutes, and there’s usually time for lunch in the centre. Cruise-day logistics

Stonehenge tickets must be booked in advance via English Heritage. The 11am slot is the right one for this routing. Salisbury Cathedral is free to enter but accepts a suggested donation; the Magna Carta exhibition is included. Lunch options in Salisbury are good (The Haunch of Venison, Cathedral Refectory, the market square); allow 45 minutes including walk-back to the cab. If timings slip, Salisbury is the section that flexes. We can shorten to “Magna Carta + cathedral exterior” if Stonehenge runs long, and still hit Heathrow on time.

• Why combine Stonehenge with Salisbury rather than visiting either alone?
  Two reasons. First, they're only 30 minutes apart and on the natural Heathrow return route — adding Salisbury costs you about 90 minutes of day but gives you a totally different second experience (medieval city versus prehistoric monument). Second, the Magna Carta is one of the few "you can't see this anywhere else" items in England, and most cruise passengers don't realise Salisbury holds an original copy.
• Can we do this for a 5pm Heathrow flight?
  Tight rather than safe. The full day plus 2.5-hour check-in buffer needs a 5:30pm departure minimum. For a 5pm flight we'd need to cut Salisbury to 45 minutes (Magna Carta only) and depend on a fast disembarkation. For a 4:30pm flight, switch to Stonehenge alone — keeps the day comfortable.
• Is Salisbury Cathedral wheelchair accessible?
  Yes — the nave, Chapter House (where the Magna Carta sits) and refectory are all accessible. The cloisters and some side chapels have step-free routes. The cathedral publishes an accessibility guide on its site.
• Do we need to book lunch in Salisbury?
  Usually no — the centre has plenty of options that walk-in fine. If you specifically want The Haunch of Venison (the famous historic pub), book a 1pm table on the day before. The Cathedral Refectory is a reliable fallback and rarely needs a booking.
• What happens if Stonehenge runs over our ticket time?
  English Heritage timed-entry tickets give you a 30-minute window to enter; once inside, there's no exit time pressure. If you're finding it more compelling than expected we can shorten Salisbury (Magna Carta only, 30 minutes, skip lunch in the centre) and still hit Heathrow on time.
