Key Terms
Indo-Saracenic
The architectural style of the Royal Pavilion exterior, blending Mughal, Indian, and Islamic motifs. Designed by John Nash, completed 1823.
The Lanes
A network of narrow alleys in central Brighton occupying the original fishing-village footprint, now home to independent jewellers, cafés, and antique shops. Distinct from "the North Laine".
North Laine
A separate shopping district north of the centre, more bohemian than the Lanes — vintage clothing, record shops, independent fashion.

Mentioned in this guide: Brighton, Royal Pavilion, John Nash, Brighton Palace Pier, Brighton i360, the Lanes, North Laine, A27, A23, M23, Gatwick Airport, Southampton Port, East Sussex, Daves Taxis, Volkswagen Caddy Maxi.

Brighton works as a 6–7 hour cruise day in a way that few other south-coast cities do — it is dense enough that three hours on foot covers the Pavilion, the Lanes and the seafront comfortably. The combined-with-Gatwick run is the under-used opportunity here: the A23 north from Brighton to Gatwick is 30 minutes, and a cruise-to-Brighton-to-Gatwick chauffeured day is the same vehicle, the same driver, one fixed price.

— David Plomer, Owner and Driver, Daves Taxis Southampton

Brighton is a dense, walkable Regency seafront city about an hour and a half east of Southampton along the A27. It packs a lot into a small footprint: King George IV’s Royal Pavilion (with the Indo-Saracenic onion domes you’d swear belonged in Mumbai), the Lanes for shopping in former fishermen’s cottages, the seafront with its pier, and a food and pub scene that is genuinely worth the visit on its own.

For a 6–7 hour cruise day, Brighton gives you something different from the historic-city tours: it’s coastal, eclectic, and genuinely lively in a way that Bath and Salisbury are not. Park-and-walk is the right approach. The Lanes are too narrow for any vehicle anyway and the central streets pedestrianise in summer.

Top Highlights

  • The Royal Pavilion. The Prince Regent’s seaside palace, designed by John Nash. Indo-Saracenic exterior, Chinoiserie interior, and arguably the most theatrical building in England
  • The Lanes — narrow alleys of independent jewellers, antique dealers, cafés and pubs in the original fishing-village footprint
  • The seafront and Brighton Palace Pier: Victorian pleasure pier with arcade, fairground rides, fish and chips
  • North Laine — different from “the Lanes” — bohemian shopping district north of the centre, vintage clothing and record shops
  • Brighton i360 — observation pod climbing 138 metres for views across the South Downs and the Channel (book ahead)

How long do you need?

Three hours in the centre is the comfortable minimum: Pavilion ticket, the Lanes, and the seafront. With the round-trip drive (about 1h 30m each way along the A27), the total comes in around 6–6.5 hours from terminal to terminal — fits a 6–7 hour cruise window with sensible buffer.

The Pavilion timed-entry tickets sell out by lunchtime in summer — pre-book on the Brighton & Hove City Council website once we have confirmed the day. The i360 also takes pre-bookings and is worth doing first thing if you are going.

On the way to Gatwick?

Brighton is a straight run up the A23/M23 to Gatwick Airport — about 30 minutes from the seafront to the terminal. If you have a Gatwick flight after disembarking, this works exceptionally well as a kill-time tour: cruise terminal → Brighton → Gatwick all in one chauffeured run with the same vehicle. Ask Dave to quote it as a combined transfer rather than two separate jobs.
