Old Sarum is the original Salisbury, an Iron Age hillfort that the Romans, the Saxons, and the Normans all reused, and the site of the first Salisbury Cathedral. The cathedral and the city moved down off the hill in the thirteenth century, leaving behind the cathedral foundations, the Norman castle on the motte, and a fantastic view across the Avon valley to the new spire two miles south.
It is an English Heritage property, open year-round, and one of the more under-visited sites in Wiltshire. I would suggest Old Sarum first while you have the energy for the ramparts, then Salisbury for the Cathedral, the Cathedral Close, and the Magna Carta in the Chapter House. The two sites tell one continuous story across about 2,000 years.
